The focus of this toolkit is to support implementation of Optimal Cord Management in all preterm babies less than 34 weeks gestation (defined by waiting at least 60 seconds before clamping the umbilical cord)
Evidence shows that optimal cord management reduces death in preterm babies by nearly a third. The number of babies needing to receive OCM to prevent a death is around 30-50 overall and may be as low as 20 in the least mature babies.
This toolkit is aimed at those who are leading or working in a quality improvement team around Optimal Cord Management. This improvement activity referred to in this toolkit is not intended to be read as a guideline which mandates a standard improvement journey for all units. Instead it is a practical resource from which units who wish to improve compliance rates of antenatal optimisation measures can select the most suitable interventions for their particular context.
